10-CWE100 - Writing Center Peer Tutor Training

This course will prepare University Writing Center tutors to engage the university community in developing its writing skills. This preparation will include an examination of tutor-client relationships and relationship skills, understanding and application of Higher Order and Lower Order Concerns, and examinations of form as it is shaped by content across genres and disciplines as they are likely to be experienced in the Center. Prerequisite for this course is employment in the University Writing Center or instructor permission.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
--Provide tutors with practical writing tutorial skills.
--Enhance tutors' understanding and application of writing content areas.
--Develop tutors' reflective practice and research skills.

ATTENDANCE
This is a required course for all University Writing Center employees and must be taken within the first year of employment. Prompt and regular attendance is expected. Six absences will result in automatic course failure, which will in turn result in discontinuation of employment in the University Writing Center.
ASSIGNMENTS
Major Project: 10-15 page Collaborative Research Paper (2-3 students/paper)
--Objectives
o Explore & examine an important issue in Writing Centers.
o Read and Study disciplinary literature (Writing Center Journal, Writing Lab Newsletter, edited collections, etc).
o Submit text for presentation and/or publication.
o Practice team building through collaborative writing.
Analysis and Evaluation of Tutoring Strengths and Weaknesses
--Objectives
o Observe two tutorial sessions and learn to examine tutoring strengths and weaknesses.
o Integrate text and observation-based knowledge into tutorial practice.
o Engage in reflective presentation.
